The General Store, Selkirk

Reuse · Repair

The General Store, Selkirk is a unique sustainability ecosystem across 4 separate sites. We fix things and make this affordable by selling second - hand electricals, vintage claes and curios, clothes, shoes, bric a brac, small furniture and more. We also operate a Tool Library and an over 60s Computer Clinic. All in the small town of Selkirk, Scottish Borders.

Hello! We are the General Store, Selkirk

A Repairmonger in the Scottish Borders

The General Store, Selkirk, launched as a Community Interest Company in 2021, becoming a charity in 2026. In the intervening 5 years we grew from one small site - where we took in repairs and sold a small selection of second-hand goods - to where we are now. One dedicated Repairmonger workshop and 4 Reuse retail spaces. In October 2025 we reached the astonishing milestone of 10,000 repairs across our threshold. Repair is our passion and Reuse retail is our way of subsidising our fixing fees, whilst adding even more value for our community, and of course the planet.

We wanted the first thought that people in our community had to be -"Can I get this repaired rather than buying a new one?" And now we also offer options to buy second-hand or even borrow rather than buying new. Our mission, above all, has always been behaviour change.

As a registered Scottish charity (SC 055050) we are for people and planet, not profit.

Donating to Us

We are very grateful for your donations, they help us keep the repair service affordable for all and to fund our other projects like the computer clinic.

As much as we would love to be able to take everything there are practical and regulatory constraints on what we can handle. Please only donate items that are in good working order as our small team of fixers don't have the capacity to fix donated goods and it is a cost to us to dispose of broken or unsuitable items.

How Our Repair Service Works

Affordable, community-powered repairs - because fixing is better than replacing

🔩

What Do We Repair?

If you can carry the item and bring it into the shop then we will take a look at it. We repair computers, clothes, small electricals, garden tools, power tools, ornaments, audio gear, small furniture and more, with only a few exceptions.

⏱️

How Long Does It Take?

Demand for our services has been amazing. Please understand we are a small team of volunteers and part-time staff. We may be slow as we work our way through things. But we always aim to keep you updated and are happy for you to keep in touch. If it's urgent please tell us when you bring it in.

🤝

Courtesy Item Service

There are some items that we can lend you whilst yours are in the Store — ask about the courtesy iron, toaster, microwave, spade, and more. So you won't be left without!

Safety PAT Testing

Most electrical repairs are PAT (safety) tested for you before we give them back — included in the fee. You can also bring items in just for PAT testing.

👷

Who Does the Fixing?

Our fixers are a mix of professional technicians and volunteers. We match the fix to the person — ensuring the right skills for every job.

💡

No Fix - No Fee

No fix, no fee - but a donation for our time spent assessing is always welcome. We are not for profit so every little helps! If we can't fix it, we ask you to take your item home and dispose of it responsibly.
